Motor ini bisa dibilang satu-satunya pemain di kelas 200 kapasitas mesin tanggung, Duke 200 bisa bikin galau konsumen, terutama buat yang mau ambil sport naked 150 cc ataupun 250 cc. Com preço sugerido por R$ a moto é um modelo tanto para motociclistas iniciantes, como para quem busca esportividade em porte compacto. Tirando detalhes como os adesivos 200, e o chassi e rodas pretas em vez de laranja, a versão menor é igual a sua irmã maior, a Duke 390 – lançada na Índia um ano depois, em 2013. Fabricada lá, a Duke é montada em Manaus pela Dafra, marca que também revende as KTM em parte de suas emprestar sua estrutura para a 390, fica fácil entender porque sobra construção ciclística na Duke 200. Com 14 kg a menos, bastam algumas voltas para perceber que sistemas como freios, suspensão e até o chassi são superdimensionados. Apesar do motor de baixa cilindrada, ela logo revela um comportamento arisco com refrigeração líquida, rende torque de 1,95 kgfm a rpm e 26 cavalos a rpm. É a mesma potência de um motor Honda 300 “a ar”, por exemplo; e mais do que uma 250 “comum”, em torno de 22 cv. Aliada ao baixo peso de 129,5 kg a seco, esta “cavalaria” garante disposição à pequena Duke. Característica que é otimizada pela caixa com seis marchas de relações curtas e com relações próximas entre si. Tudo para aproveitar o desempenho do monocilindro de 199,5 curso menor do que o diâmetro do pistão, além de cabeçote com duplo comando para as quatro válvulas, o “motorzinho” manteve a tradicional progressão de competição, que prioriza as altas rotações para render bem. Apesar disso, entrega boa força em baixos giros, porém é a partir das rpm que começa a se animar, crescendo com saúde até as rpm, rotação que é “brecada” pelo corte eletrônico da injeção. Desta forma, a pequena Duke acelera e retoma rápido no uso urbano. Em rodovias, a 100 km/h, o conta-giros belisca as rpm, de forma que vibra mais do que o esperado, e acaba “engessada” pelo câmbio curto. Sua máxima fica em torno de 130 km/h reais, “cortando” a 137 km/h em 6ª marcha. Seu guidão não esterça tanto e é mais estreito por não trazer os volumosos contra-pesos nas pontas – existentes em sua irmã maior. Sinal inclusive de que seu motor funciona mais suave. A suspensão da grife WP, com bengalas dianteiras invertidas e monoamortecedor traseiro, atua firme e mostra razoável progressividade em pisos ruins. O assento alto, a 81 cm do solo poderia ser menos duro para atenuar a suspensão esportiva. Agrada o tanque volumoso com a base estreita, que permite bom encaixe das pernas. Mas, por conta da capa plástica volumosa, comporta menos gasolina do que aparenta; 12 litros. Diante do consumo contido, em torno de 24 km/litro urbanos, está de bom tamanho. Seus freios a disco revelam dimensões generosas dianteiro de 300 mm com pinças de fixação radial; traseiro de 230 mm e garantem frenagens contundentes. Porém, não oferece a opção do sistema ABS comum à 390. No uso urbano chamou atenção a agilidade e leveza da moto em desvios, e na precisão de trajetória. Acabamento e custo-benefícioO acabamento geral da KTM é bem cuidado, com excessão dos plásticos usados nos punhos, da rabeta simples, e a tampa tipo aviação chata de fechar.
